The Role Your Feet Play in Lower Back Pain

As the crisp cold weather approaches, many are setting out on hikes and scenic walks to enjoy the outdoors. With this, the occurrence of low back pain and hip discomfort becomes prevalent in some, and your feet may be playing a role!


Improper footwear can be a big contributor to our overall posture and biomechanics. The foot’s mobility and positioning directly affects your gait and may cause compensation in other joints of the body if restricted. Limitations in the foot place more stress on the ankles, knees, hips and lower back resulting in further pain/discomfort.

Thoroughly assessing the foot and your footwear can minimize your occurrence of further injury. For instance, a flatter arch may cause overpronation of the foot which places additional stress on the knee and lower back. In addition, limited mobility of the big toe could result in an alteration in foot gait which contributes to ailments such as plantar fasciitis and mid foot pain.


The best way to avoid any complications due to improper foot mechanics is to assess your footwear and ensure it isn’t limiting your overall function. Some factors to consider in footwear to ensure your feet are well supported are the following:

  • A wide toe box

  • Flexibility at the ball of the foot

  • Adequate cushioning throughout the shoe

  • Appropriate arch support

  • Laces to accommodate different lace techniques
