Note on terminology: In this article, the terms male and female are used to refer to reproductive anatomy relevant to fertility. Male refers to individuals with sperm-producing reproductive anatomy, and female refers to individuals with ovaries and a uterus.

Acupuncture has long been used as a complementary therapy to support overall health and wellbeing, and fertility is one area where it may have an important role. While acupuncture is often discussed in the context of menstrual health, ovulation and female fertility, it can also be a valuable tool for supporting male reproductive health and fertility.

Fertility is complex and influenced by many factors, including reproductive hormones, ovarian function, sperm health, blood flow, metabolic health, stress, inflammation, and overall health. Because of this, fertility care is often most effective when it takes a whole-person approach.

Acupuncture can be incorporated into a fertility plan alongside naturopathic medicine, nutrition, lifestyle changes and, when appropriate, conventional fertility care. It is not intended to replace medical investigation or treatment, but rather can be used as a complementary therapy tailored to an individual's reproductive goals and health history.

How does acupuncture support female fertility?

For females, acupuncture may be particularly useful when reproductive health concerns involve the menstrual cycle, ovulation, pelvic circulation, stress or hormonal regulation. A healthy menstrual cycle requires coordination between the brain, ovaries and reproductive hormones. The hypothalamus and pituitary gland communicate with the ovaries through a series of hormonal signals that regulate follicle development, ovulation and the production of estrogen and progesterone. Acupuncture may help support this communication through effects on the nervous system and neuroendocrine pathways. Rather than simply targeting one hormone, acupuncture is often used with the goal of supporting overall regulation of the systems involved in reproductive function.

Supporting Cycle Regularity

A predictable menstrual cycle can provide useful information about ovulation and reproductive hormone function. Irregular or unpredictable cycles can occur for many reasons, including stress, changes in body weight, polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome (PMOS, previously PCOS), thyroid dysfunction, perimenopause and other hormonal or metabolic factors.

Acupuncture may be incorporated into care for individuals experiencing irregular cycles, particularly when stress, pain, or other functional concerns are contributing factors. Treatment is individualized based on the person's symptoms and health history rather than using a single set of acupuncture points for everyone. It is important to note that an irregular menstrual cycle can sometimes indicate an underlying medical condition. Acupuncture should therefore be used alongside appropriate assessment rather than as a substitute for investigating the cause of cycle irregularity.

Supporting Ovulation

Ovulation is a key component of fertility, and acupuncture may be used as part of a broader strategy to support regular ovulatory cycles. For individuals with irregular ovulation, the underlying cause is particularly important. For example, PMOS can involve irregular ovulation alongside changes in insulin regulation and androgen levels. Other individuals may experience changes in ovulation associated with significant stress, under-fueling, excessive exercise, or other hormonal conditions. Acupuncture can be used alongside nutritional and lifestyle strategies to support overall reproductive health while the underlying cause is being addressed.

Supporting Pelvic Blood Flow

Acupuncture increases local circulation around areas where needles are inserted and can influence vascular and nervous-system activity. In fertility care, acupuncture points may be selected with the goal of supporting circulation to the pelvic region. Healthy blood flow is important for reproductive tissues, including the uterus and ovaries. Acupuncture is therefore sometimes incorporated into fertility treatment plans with the goal of supporting the pelvic environment. However, improved blood flow should not be interpreted as a guarantee of improved fertility or implantation. Fertility is influenced by many variables, and acupuncture is best viewed as one component of a comprehensive treatment plan.

Acupuncture, Stress and the Nervous System

One of the most useful aspects of acupuncture may be its effects on the nervous system.

Trying to conceive can be emotionally and physically demanding. Tracking ovulation, undergoing testing, navigating fertility treatments, and experiencing uncertainty from month to month can all contribute to stress. Acupuncture can promote relaxation and activate pathways associated with the parasympathetic nervous system, sometimes referred to as the "rest and digest" side of the nervous system. Many people find that acupuncture sessions provide an opportunity to slow down, relax, and step away from the constant focus that can accompany fertility treatment. This does not mean that stress is the cause of infertility or that someone simply needs to "relax" to become pregnant. Fertility concerns are multifactorial, and telling someone to reduce stress can oversimplify a very complex experience. Rather, supporting nervous-system regulation can be one part of supporting overall wellbeing during the fertility journey.

What about acupuncture during IVF?

Acupuncture is also commonly incorporated into fertility treatment for individuals undergoing assisted reproductive technologies such as IVF. Some research has explored acupuncture around different stages of IVF, including during ovarian stimulation, around egg retrieval and embryo transfer, and during the waiting period following transfer. Studies have investigated outcomes such as stress, anxiety, pain, quality of life, and pregnancy-related outcomes and have found benefit. There is value in incorporating acupuncture into an IVF plan for relaxation, symptom management and supportive care, particularly when treatment is individualized and coordinated with the patient's fertility team.

How does acupuncture support male fertility?

Fertility is not solely a female health concern. Male-factor infertility contributes to a substantial proportion of infertility cases, making assessment and treatment of sperm health an important part of fertility care. Acupuncture has been studied for several aspects of male reproductive health, including sperm concentration, motility, morphology, and sperm DNA integrity. Some research suggests that acupuncture may have beneficial effects on certain semen parameters. Acupuncture may also be used to support hormonal regulation and the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis, which plays an important role in testosterone production and sperm development. Potential mechanisms include effects on circulation, the autonomic nervous system, inflammation, and oxidative stress. For example, acupuncture can increase local circulation around areas of needle insertion and may influence vascular tone. Acupuncture also affects the autonomic nervous system, which can support relaxation and nervous-system regulation. Since chronic physiological stress and oxidative stress can influence reproductive health, addressing these factors may be useful as part of a comprehensive fertility plan. As with female fertility, acupuncture is not a replacement for investigating potential causes of male-factor infertility. A semen analysis and appropriate medical evaluation can help identify issues that may require targeted treatment.

Acupuncture and Fertility: An Individualized Approach

There is no single "fertility acupuncture protocol" that is appropriate for everyone.

At Frame Fidelity, acupuncture treatments are individualized based on your symptoms, health history, and fertility goals. Treatment may look different depending on whether someone is experiencing irregular cycles, painful menstruation, PMOS, concerns about ovulation, preparing for IVF, navigating stress, or seeking support for male reproductive health. Consistency can also be important. Reproductive health changes over time, and acupuncture is generally approached as a series of treatments rather than a one-time intervention. Your treatment plan may change throughout your menstrual cycle or as your fertility treatment progresses. Acupuncture can also be integrated with other naturopathic strategies, including nutrition, lifestyle support and targeted supplementation when appropriate.

What does a fertility acupuncture session look like?

At Frame Fidelity, we aim to make acupuncture sessions comfortable, relaxing and personalized. Appointments are typically 45–60 minutes and begin with a short check-in regarding your current concerns, symptoms, and progress. We also review relevant health history and take time to answer questions and obtain informed consent before beginning treatment. Your practitioner then selects acupuncture points based on your individual presentation and treatment goals. Depending on the treatment plan, points may be used on the abdomen, back, legs, arms, ears, or other areas of the body. Once the needles are inserted, you will typically have approximately 20–30 minutes to relax while the treatment takes place. Many people find this portion of the appointment deeply relaxing, and some may notice a sense of calm or relaxation during or immediately after treatment. While some people notice changes after their first session, fertility care generally focuses on consistent treatment over time rather than expecting one acupuncture appointment to produce a specific reproductive outcome.

A Complementary Approach to Fertility Care

Fertility can be an incredibly personal journey, and there is rarely one factor that explains the entire picture. Acupuncture offers one way to support reproductive health while also addressing the nervous system, relaxation, and overall well-being. Whether you are trying to regulate your menstrual cycle, support ovulation, preparing for IVF, managing the physical and emotional demands of fertility treatment, or looking for additional support for sperm health, acupuncture can be considered as part of an individualized fertility-care plan.

At Frame Fidelity, our goal is to meet you where you are and create a treatment approach that complements your existing healthcare and fertility goals.
