With our Parenting Coach, Tania Grinberg
In today’s parenting culture, it can feel like we’re drowning in a sea of advice, constantly measuring ourselves against impossible standards. Everywhere we turn, there are “shoulds” and “musts” that make us question if we’re getting anything right. But here’s the truth: parenting isn’t about perfection. It’s about connection.
In today’s parenting culture, it can feel like we’re drowning in a sea of advice, constantly measuring ourselves against impossible standards. Everywhere we turn, there are “shoulds” and “musts” that make us question if we’re getting anything right. But here’s the truth: parenting isn’t about perfection—it’s about connection.
Our children’s challenging behaviours—whether it’s tantrums, defiance, or attitude—aren’t signs that we’ve failed as parents. These behaviours are a normal expression of their maturing brains and bodies. Kids are navigating big emotions with developing skills, and their struggles aren’t a reflection of our worth as caregivers.
What matters most is how we respond when things don’t go as planned. Every moment, even those where our reactions don’t sit right with us, is an opening for a conversation and an opportunity to repair.
Repairing isn’t about erasing the mistake; it’s about acknowledging it. By speaking with our kids about what happened—owning our missteps, apologising, and explaining how we’ll try to do better—we model accountability and emotional awareness. These conversations help our children make sense of the hard moments in their lives and teach them that relationships can weather imperfections.
In fact, the way we help our kids process these moments has a far greater impact on their resilience and secure attachment with us than striving for perfection ever could. By showing our kids that relationships can grow stronger through repair, we give them a blueprint for handling challenges with trust and empathy.
So, let’s give ourselves permission to stumble. Let’s embrace the messy, human side of parenting. After all, it’s not about getting it right all the time—it’s about showing up, being real, and building stronger connections one repair at a time.
