As we enter the winter season, many people find themselves feeling low. The combination of shorter days, not spending as much time outside, and reduced sunlight have an impact on our mood and energy, and can get us into a slump that can last months. While it’s common to feel this way, there are natural strategies that a naturopathic doctor can help you with to get you feeling like yourself again.

So what are some of these strategies? Here are 5 things you can do to improve your mood during the winter season:

Get Your Vitamin D Checked

Low vitamin D levels have been associated with low mood, and can often be one of the reasons for the winter blues. Why is this? Well, there is less sunlight during the colder months, and sunlight is our primary source of vitamin D. For this reason, a naturopathic doctor will often recommend you maximize your time outside when it’s brightest, ensuring you get at least a little bit of sunlight whenever possible! In addition to this, oftentimes they will run lab work to assess your vitamin D levels and supplement adequately if necessary. This can make a big difference with your mood.

Use a Light Therapy Lamp

Light therapy lamps are used to mimic natural sunlight, and can be helpful in boosting your mood. Additionally, sunlight is essential for the suppression of melatonin (our sleepy hormone), and when we don’t have as much of it during the winter months, we experience more daytime fatigue. These special lamps can help with this when used first thing in the morning.

Prioritize Nutritious Food

A naturopathic approach to the winter blues often emphasizes the importance of a well-balanced and nutrient-rich diet. Ensuring we consume enough protein every day, eat 2-3 consistent meals daily, and incorporate lots of colourful fruits and vegetables is very important when working on healthy mood balance. Additionally, incorporating foods rich in healthy fats, such as omega-3s, can be very nourishing to our nervous system.

Optimize Your Sleep

Sleep is one of our pillars of health, and proper sleep hygiene is essential when working on mood regulation. Naturopathic doctors often stress the importance of maintaining a consistent sleep schedule, ensuring you have a conducive sleep environment, and adopting healthy bedtime habits. They can help you get back on track with your sleep.

Try Mood-Boosting Herbs & Supplements

Herbal remedies and supplements are a major part of a naturopathic doctor’s treatment plan. There are many that are evidence-based and can greatly improve mood including saffron, st. john’s wort, 5-HTP, vitamin D and fish oil. Remember it’s always a good idea to consult a naturopathic doctor before trying any new herbs or supplements to ensure they’re right and safe for you.

So, as the cold months settle in, remember that there are options to improve your mental health. If you’re looking for personalized guidance in the coming months, our naturopath, Dr. Angelica is here to help you. Wishing you a vibrant, joyful and healthy winter season!
