Carrying a baby may feel natural, but doing it repeatedly throughout the day can place a surprising amount of stress on the body. As babies grow, so do the physical demands on parents and caregivers.
Many parents notice tension and soreness in the:
● Neck
● Shoulders
● Wrists
● Forearms
● Low back
● Hips
One of the biggest culprits is carrying baby on the same side consistently. This pattern causes you to shift weight onto one hip or shoulder, which can lead to muscle imbalances, increased tension, and joint restrictions in the body.
Tips to reduce strain while carrying baby:
● Alternate sides when possible
● Keep baby close to your body
● Avoid leaning or ‘popping’ the hip out while standing
● Take breaks
● Focus on body positioning during carrying
Don’t ignore tension discomfort! Small aches and tightness can build over time, especially with repetitive carrying throughout the day. Addressing discomfort early can help prevent more persistent irritation or injury later on.
How Chiropractic care may help
Chiropractic care can help support parents and caregivers by improving mobility, reducing muscle tension and helping the body adapt to the physical demands of daily parenting.
Treatment may include:
● Spinal or extremity adjusting
● Soft tissue therapy
● Stretching and exercise recommendations
● Postural support and education
Caring for a baby is physically demanding — and taking care of your body matters too!
